Firs hour in Japan- what you need to get

As soon as you land in Japan, prioritize getting two key things sorted to ensure you have an enjoyable and smooth-sailing trip exploring this beautiful country.

To be fully prepared as soon as you pass passport control, focus on the following:

1. Get a SIM Card

Upon arrival, head straight to the counter where SIM cards are sold. You can choose between a SIM card with a Japanese phone number or one with just internet data. We opted for a data-only SIM, which worked perfectly for our needs. However, some people recommend getting a SIM with a phone number, as certain reservations may require one. If necessary, you can provide your hotel’s phone number instead.

For us, data-only was sufficient, and we never needed a Japanese phone number. Prices vary based on the duration of your internet needs. We purchased a 30-day unlimited data SIM for 7,000 Yen, which we shared between the two of us. Be mindful that using your phone as a hotspot can drain the battery quickly.

2. Get a "Welcome Suica" Card

The Welcome Suica card is specifically designed for tourists and is valid for 28 days from the date of purchase. This card can only be bought at the airport, so head straight to the metro station and look for the special machine labeled “Welcome Suica.” This card will make your travel around Japan much more convenient.

There’s also a regular Suica card app, but at the time of our visit, it was only compatible with iPhones. However, I have seen that there will be a Suica app for Android starting in 2025, so look into this option before flying.

Once you have these two essentials sorted, you’ll be well-equipped to enjoy your stay in Japan without any hitches.

Enjoy your trip!
