A Magical Christmas in Madrid: My Favorite Things to Do

If you’re visiting Madrid at Christmas, get ready for an unforgettable holiday! The city comes alive with sparkling lights, cozy markets, and festive traditions. I’ve spent many Christmases here, and I’d love to share some of my favorite things to do. Picture me telling you all of this over a hot chocolate—it’s that kind of chat. Let’s dive in!

1. Christmas Markets (28th November - 31st December)

Madrid’s Christmas markets may not be the famous German ones, but they’re getting better every year! A few years ago, you couldn’t find Glühwein (mulled wine) anywhere, but now it’s in almost every market. It’s such a cozy treat on a chilly evening.

Here are some of the markets you can visit:

  1. Plaza Mayor: A classic Spanish market with lots of traditional stalls.
  2. Plaza de España: A modern market with a fun vibe.
  3. Nuevos Ministerios: Great for families.
  4. Paseo de Recoletos (next to Cibeles): This is an arts and crafts fair, perfect for handmade gifts.
  5. Plaza de Colón: Small but lively.
  6. Plaza de Juan Goytisolo (behind Museo Reina Sofía): A hidden gem for a quieter experience.
  7. Plaza de Isabel II: Small and charming.
  8. Parque Caleido: A newer market with a cozy atmosphere.
  9. Madrid Río (behind Matadero): A lovely riverside market.

2. Nativity Scene in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (7th December - 7th January)

One of my favorite Spanish Christmas traditions is visiting nativity scenes, or “belenes”, and the one in San Lorenzo de El Escorial is incredible. They set up a life-sized nativity scene all over the village center.
Bundle up (it’s colder up in the mountains!) and take a stroll with some hot chocolate and churros. It’s magical during the day and even more beautiful at night with all the lights. Getting there from Madrid takes about 50 minutes by car or on the Cercanías C8 train. Trust me, it’s worth the trip!

3. Ice Skating with Friends and Family

What’s more Christmassy than ice skating? Madrid doesn’t have frozen lakes, but they set up lots of ice rinks around the city during the holidays. It’s so much fun skating under the Christmas lights!

Here are some great spots to go skating:

  1. Plaza de España
  2. Plaza de Colón
  3. El Matadero
  4. Palacio de Cibeles
  5. Rosewood Villa Magna
  6. Palacio de Hielo
  7. El Metropolitano Stadium: From 21st December to 5th January, it’s turned into a full Christmas village.

4. Cortylandia

If you want to feel like a local, you can’t miss Cortylandia. It’s a giant display on the side of El Corte Inglés Preciados (near Puerta del Sol). Think of it like a big animated scene with music and lights—a favorite for families and kids. It’s been running for over 40 years!

The shows run daily at these times:

  • Monday to Sunday: 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00, 20:00, and 21:00.

5. Three Wise Men Parade (Cabalgata de Reyes)

Did you know that in Spain, kids get their presents on January 6th? That’s because the Three Wise Men (Los Tres Reyes Magos) are the ones who bring gifts instead of Santa Claus. On the evening of January 5th, Madrid hosts an incredible parade where the Wise Men ride through the streets, waving to the crowds and tossing candy to kids. The energy and excitement in the air make it an event you don’t want to miss!

On January 6th, families come together to share a Roscón de Reyes, a festive sweet bread with hidden surprises inside. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a toy, which can mean good luck—or that you’ll have to buy the roscón next year!

This year, the parade will travel along Paseo de la Castellana, finishing at Plaza de Cibeles. It starts at 6:30 PM, so be sure to grab a good spot early!

6. San Silvestre (31st December)

If you like sports or just festive fun, the San Silvestre Vallecana is the place to be on New Year’s Eve. Thousands of people dress up in Christmas costumes and run a 10K race through the streets of Madrid.

The race starts at 16:45, and it’s always a good time, whether you’re running or just cheering from the sidelines. You can sign up here.

7. Theater and Light Shows

Madrid is a great city for theater, and Christmas is no exception. You can see classics like The Nutcracker or musicals like The Lion King, Aladdin, and Mamma Mia.

Another must-see is the Naturaleza Encendida light show at the Botanical Gardens. Walking through the glowing lights feels like stepping into a magical world.

Madrid is full of holiday cheer during Christmas. Whether you’re exploring markets, watching parades, or just enjoying the festive lights, there’s something for everyone. I hope you get to experience these wonderful traditions and make some amazing memories.

Enjoy your trip, and happy holidays!
